  • Final day in Valkenburg!

    Wed 11 May 2016 J Smyth

The heat didn’t let up in Valkenburg today, and with temperatures reaching 27’, the children enjoyed the breath-taking views from the chairlift, followed by the thrill of the roller coaster ride on the toboggan run at ‘A Gogo’. Each child was able to choose his/her own speed with the brake, and slide down the mountain, where they then got the draglift back up to the starting point again. Once everyone had a turn, it was back down the mountain once more on the chairlift, to the town for some last minute shopping and much needed ice cream!

After lunch it was off to Kinderstad Heerlen for yet more adrenalin inducing action! Kinderstad, I am told, is like Indianaland times 10 – with dodgems, ball pits, rollercoasters, trampolines, etc. etc.

With an enormous appetite worked up, it was back to the hotel for tea, diary updates, and a final pack, before hitting the silent dance floor!!! With gifts of sunglasses and caps from the very generous Rico, the tireless children grooved to the silent beat! I will let them tell you more about that!!! The finale in the evening was a Congo, led by Rico, outside on the street! Sounds like yet another amazing day and a great end to a very successful trip!

Congratulations to Ms Seaton, Mr. Bradley, Mrs. Drysdale, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Tyrie for making Valkenburg 2016 such an amazing experience for the P.7 children. And well done children for your fantastic behaviour!

  • Day 4 at Efteling Theme Park

    Tue 10 May 2016 J Smyth

At 9am this morning everyone left for the 1½ hour journey to Europe’s largest Theme Park called ‘Efteling’. Efteling is a fantasy themed amusement park in Kaatsheuvel where all the attractions are based on elements from ancient myths and legends, fairy tales, fables and folklore. Needless to say, they all had an absolutely amazing time! Although it was a very warm, grey and humid day, this did not dampen their spirits or sense of adventure. In fact, many of the children displayed amazing feats of bravery as they attempted rides on rollercoasters for the very first time! One of the rides many embarked on was the brand new roller coaster called ‘The Baron’, which incorporates a vertical drop! Such was their courage today that some were given special ‘Awards for Bravery’!!!

Healthy eating was certainly not on the agenda, as they devoured chips and strange, but tasty, sausages – all washed down with doughnuts and fizzy drinks! After all this exceptionally ‘healthy food’ (!?) it was time to go onboard the ‘Pirate Ship’. Amazingly, no one was sick!!!

They returned this evening, exhausted yet elated, at 7.30pm. A long, but extremely successful day…

  • Day 3 in Valkenburg!

    Mon 09 May 2016 J Smyth

Another scorching day began with a trip to the swimming pool, where everyone had a splashing time going down the various slides, and experiencing the relaxing ‘Lazy River Ride’. As it was so hot today the outdoor pool was open, and, tricked by the adults into thinking it was as warm as the indoor pool, some of our very trusting children jumped into the freezing, cold water – needless-to-say their shrieks could be heard from afar! All good fun though, and if truth be told, a welcome relief from the heat of the sun!

In the afternoon it was off to Valkenier theme park, to enjoy the rollercoasters, dodgems, ghost train and last but certainly not least, the ice-creams and Slushies!!!

Having purchased a football this afternoon, it was then off to the park for football match.

As you can imagine, they are all now exhausted (as are the children!!!), so they are all crashed in front of the big screen, in their pyjamas, watching ‘Meet Dave’! I wonder how many will fall asleep before the end?!

  • Holland Trip - Day 2

    Sun 08 May 2016 J Smyth

Another fun packed day in Valkenburg!

After breakfast this morning everyone set off on what was yet another glorious, sunny day, to begin a very full itinerary. The first stop was to explore the caves, where they were also able to cool off. Next on the agenda was a shopping spree, where apparently some purchasing of gifts for home happened!! Before lunch they visited the War Cemetery, where the children’s behaviour was impeccable, as they walked quietly around, showing great respect.

Following lunch, the children thoroughly enjoyed walking from the Netherlands, into Belgium, and then into Germany - the famous point where the three countries meet!!! Having worked up a good appetite with all the walking they had done, chips and frankfurters were devoured by all for tea. The very full and exciting day was rounded off with a game of 10pin bowling this evening. All are now safely away to bed and looking forward to yet another fun-filled day!

  • Holland trip update

    Sat 07 May 2016 J Smyth
Day 1: Everyone has arrived safely and, as you read this, the children are all tucked up in bed for the night! The flight went without any hitches, and despite a rather long wait at Passport Control, Hank (the lovely coach driver), was waiting to journey everyone to the next stop. Although rather hot, everyone enjoyed a cruise down one of Amsterdam's canals, taking in all the city's sights and attractions. And now an early night to recharge the batteries for all the thrills and excitement in store tomorrow!
