Personal Development and Mutual Understanding is an important part of our curriculum. PDMU is linked to all aspects of life and work in school, flowing through activities and discussions in class, to learning how to interact with others out in the playground. It is concerned with establishing a sense of personal responsibility, self-esteem, sensitivity to the needs of others and being part of a community both within the school and beyond it.
Children will learn that they have a value and a place in this world, allowing them to grow in confidence and learn about others issues concerning their own personal health. PDMU takes place via circle time in Foundation and KS1, and circle time, discussions and activities through KS2.
'PDMU focuses on encouraging each child to become personally, emotionally and socially effective, to lead healthy, safe and fulfilled lives and to become confident, independent and responsible citizens, making informed and responsible choices and decisions throughout their lives.' (NI Curriculum)
Manner of the Month
In KS2 we have introduced a new initiative called 'Manner of the Month'. Each month a characteristic or good character trait is chosen. All pupils in P4-7 are then encouraged to display this manner as best they can throughout the whole month. At the end of the month each teacher picks a child in the class who has shown that they can display good character.
The different manners which can be chosen are :
Caring Nature – Empathy
Have a look at our winners from when this new initiative was introduced below. We feel it is a super way to discuss ways in which we should behave both in school, in the playground and in our community.
