Playscripts

Hello P7 – this week we are going to study playscripts. A playscript tells actors in a play or in a TV show/film what they have to say.

Watch the video below to explore the features of a playscript. There is a also a PowerPoint that explains what makes a playscript.

Key features in a Playscript

Playscript features

Below are two examples of a playscrip. Read through the playscripts and see if you can identify why a playscript is different than a novel. What features of a play script can you find? Maybe you could act out one of these two plays with your family members?

Here is one last playscript for you - The Story of Rama and Sita. Read through the play and then answer the comprehension questions that follow.

Check this info carefully so that you know which comprehension to do.

Complete the comprehension for your reading group.

Winklesea/ Rocky the Dinosaur/ P7S Red group– Comprehension 1

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory/George’s Marvellous Medicine/ P7S Green group – Comprehension 2

Harry’s Mad/ Matilda/ P7S Gold and Rainbow groups – Comprehension 3

Once you’ve read the playscripts and fully explored the website, we’d like you to write your own playscript based on a fairytale. Some titles might include:

  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears
  • 3 Little Pigs
  • Jack and the Beanstalk

Or you can think of your own. Choose a fairytale that is simple and that you can tell without your playscript being too long.

You will need to include these features:

  1. Title
  2. List of characters (you can include a narrator who will tell a good part of your story)
  3. Character names followed by a colon (:) and then their dialogue (spoken words)
  4. Stage directions
  5. You can split your play into scenes if you wish

This link will give your further info on what a play is and how to go about writing your own play.
This link will give you access to playscripts from several CBBC shows.

When you are ready, write out your fairytale playscript in your books. We hope you enjoy writing it and we'd love to see your finished playscripts.

The page below contains a checklist - make sure you have included all of the necessary playscript features.
