Today we are practising some multiplying and dividing by 10 or 100 or 1000.
Remember, you are actually moving the digits left for multiplying or right for dividing, but of course, when you're working with whole numbers (not decimals,) you can cheat and simply stick on or remove the correct number of zeros!
Things to remember:
X by 10.... all digits move ONE column LEFT
/ by 10... all digits move ONE column RIGHT
X by 100.... all digits move TWO columns LEFT
/ by 100... all digits move TWO columns RIGHT
X by 1000.... all digits move THREE columns LEFT
/ by 1000... all digits move THREE columns RIGHT
E.g. 64 x 100
(Cheat: there are 2 zeros on 100, so you can just stick 2 zeros onto the 64)
= 6,400
What you have actually done is: you've moved the 6 two columns left from T to Th; moved the 4 two columns left from U to H; then you needed to add in two zeros as you can't leave empty spaces in the T and U columns.
For dividing, you simply reverse this to go right. This time, you will need to REMOVE the zeros as they aren't really needed as the other digits move to the right.
